A Lovely Gift for My Lovely Readers: Yahoo! Directory Listed Domains
|

So I read this badass post by EarlGrey a day or so ago, and got coding. I’ve been scanning various .edu sites, dmoz directory mirrors, and of course, a variety of Yahoo directories(including international), and have come up with a sizable list of domains (Currently about 370) that are listed in at least one of those places, and have expired domains. Try and do this manually btw, and you’ll hate yourself. I had an automated scanner running all night.
For those who are unfamiliar, dmoz is a webdirectory that is both very VERY specific about who gets inclusion, and has a waiting list of over 2 years for many categories just to get reviewed. Yahoo directory meanwhile, costs $299 for each country submitted to, completely non-refundable, just to get reviewed. After that, it’s another fuckin $299 per year. So get these and develop them while they’re hot.
Oh yeah, I can’t guarantee if these have been banned from Google or not. Do your own research, and pray. However, since they’re dmoz/yahoo listed, I doubt most were engaging in shady practices. But Check Each Domain Before Buying!
Update: Of the Original 61, the following are confirmed left. There maybe more, I got banned from the whois server while checking.

If you don’t see backlinks for these, check them again with www. in front of the domain.
I’ll try and pump out another post today, but today and tomorrow, I’m COMPLETELY swamped.
Enjoy!

Nice gift.
Next thing you’ll be telling us that there are thousands of domains listed on DMOZ that haven’t been touched in years and that you can buy for an email and a few dollars…

I am pleased people got something out of me posting the tip.
Nice one for posting that list.
Very sweet

It’s a nice list, but I don’t see the use. Neither Dmoz nor Yahoo listings tend to get many visitors. Also, when a domain gets dropped Google kills all of the backlinks so there is no SEO value. I think it would be better to get sites that had links from high traffic sites and hope they were still sending visitors you could monetize.

You sure about that? I’ve used domains from a source like this before, and Google DEFINITELY picked the links back up(although that was a bit ago). It does take a bit though.
But think about it.
If they truly did that, it would be terrible in the future; by the time the 5th owner had the domain, there would be A LOT of different common places that he would just not be able to drop backlinks, since they could be mistaken for that of his predecesors.
Beyond that, even if Google drops them, you can bet that Yahoo still cares a LOT.
Just my opinion though.

Very nice of you to post this. I was just a tad late for the party. I’ll have to check back often. Very often.

@Dink: Last I checked many were still alive. But maybe someone swooped in and took em. I’ll run em through a checker later today.

admin:
Matt Cutts was saying a couple days ago at PubCon (to Todd Mintz) about how Google DOES kill the link equity on expired domains:

In that, it states they’re PLANNING on killing it on expired domains. So exploit away, just do so quickly.
