  • Supercharge Your Backlinks: Promoting your Promoters

We’ve previously discussed internal linking and the Google Supplemental index. Now, obviously, not everyone employs the tactics discussed in there, and many backlinks that every site has never end up getting indexed. In this entry, we’ll cover how to give your backlinks some extra spunk to either make them more powerful, or to bump them out of the supplemental index to give you some real link juice.

    Understanding The Ideal Backlink
The ideal backlink has 2 traits. The page it is on is linked to internally as frequently as possible, and it is linked to externally by at least one site. Having both of these traits tells google that it is both important to the site on which it is referenced, and was found to be of interest by at least one other person on there on the internet.

    Gathering your Backlinks
Aside from using the standard linkdomain: commands and the like on Yahoo, there are 2 methods that can be used to figure out your true backlinks. First(whitehat sites only), Google Webmaster tools. Second, checking your referral logs. Each link from both of these that you plan on giving a bump to should be verified; referer spam, and also pages where your site will not always be referenced(digg upcoming pages, etc) should be ignored. In most cases, the same goes for no-follow links.

    Promoting your Backlinks
You don’t need to provide an overwhelming amount of power to these backlinks. The more the better obviously, but there’s generally too many to give a tremendous amount of link love to any individual link. But there’s some quick methods you can use.
    First, do-follow blogs.
Second, reference them in forum posts. Dig around on the commonly used webmaster forums, and find the MASSIVE threads where the link could conceivably apply, and put your link there. Staying on the larger threads makes it more likely that that particular thread(and your link drop) will be referenced in a timely manner.
Third, if you have a forum or pligg(digg clone) site you’re a frequent commenter on, and you have yet to set your “website” or sig in your member profile, consider setting it to be an important backlink for your site(think high PR backlinks, but with rare internal references).
Fourth, in a pinch, shoutboxes are rarely moderated, and common. Normally they allow links too. Consider dropping in one of those.

Selecting Anchor Text(Whitehat Style. Blackhats, your method is at the very bottom)
Many of you know that when you’re promoting your own site, it’s important to swap around the anchor text to prevent Google from thinking it’s an automated promotion method. Unless you’re doing this blackhat style for thousands of links, that’s not necessary here. Take whatever keywords YOU are trying to rank for, and promote the pages with your backlinks using that as the anchor text. Search Engines do attempt to detect if incoming links are from relevant pages, and having similar backlink text to what you’re trying to rank for can often make the link just that much more valuable to you.

Conclusion: Having a bunch of backlinks means very little if they are given no weight within the search engine, and not every link is going to be a sitewide link. It’s an absolute waste. Watch your referer logs, and give em a link drop or two. Keeping it relevant to your base topic, and as relevant as possible to the page your backlink is on benefits both you, and the person you’re promoting. Really, on the off chance their site ranks higher than you for the keyword(which is unlikely), you’ll still probably get the traffic, so you have nothing to lose.

Promoting Your Backlinks the Blackhat Way(Whitehats, you can skip this)
Ladies and gentleman, start your XRumer’s. Ok. So if there is a way to dump the places your link was actually dropped(IE get the thread URL), I have yet to find it in XRumer. Although, it is an oddly designed program, so I can’t guarantee there’s none. But either way, what I would do is check my referer logs for the site, and pull out everything that’s not a search engine. That leaves you with only the links that were successfully dropped. Then run them through a quick link verifier to make sure they still exist. After that, you have 2 options.
1)Take the links that are still there, and load them into XRumer as a Macro in the “URL” section of your profile, and let er rip, signing up for forums without posting.
2)You can also load them into both that field, AND into the message. Keep in mind though, that loading them into the actual message makes it much more likely the message will eventually be deleted. Also, you should not be abusive in this practice. 1 or 2 backlinks to each backlink is more than substantial. You don’t want to piss the webmaster off, and also don’t want to accidentally rank them above you. For this method, you should shuffle your backlink text between at least 3-5 phrases related to your base topic.

Be careful with this one. You can get all your backlinks deleted, get reported, or just pollute the internet so much that blackhats get cracked down on again. Right now, link buying is in Google’s crosshairs; keep it like that.

And I’m a member of SeoMoz, but am barely a part of the community. I don’t put out articles there, just because it would takeaway traffic from here.
